ICA/AIA Steering Committee Requests Contractor Participation

Get involved on the ground floor of this new and promising committee. The ICA/AIA Steering Committee is looking for ICA member contractors who would like to help develop the charter and the direction for this committee. Its draft goal is to create a teamwork mindset between the architectural and construction industries in Indiana. Their intent is to foster a greater collaborative approach to the design and building process that stresses increased communications and win-win thinking. Free Webinar: Industry Economists to Discuss Forecasts for 2010 Construction Activity

Three construction industry economists will present “The Year Ahead for Construction: A Perfect '10?” at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 22. Ken Simonson, Associated General Contractors (AGC) of America; Jim Haughey, Reed Construction Data; and Kermit Baker, The American Institute of Architects, will discuss and analyze current market conditions. They will also deliver their forecasts of residential and non-residential construction activity for 2010 and beyond. Indiana Laborers' Training Trust Fund Will Host Two Traffic Control Supervisor Classes

The Fund will host two traffic control supervisor classes in 2010. The first one will be held January 25 – 29; the second is set for February 22 – 26. These classes are approved by the Indiana Department of Transportation. Class size is limited to 25 individuals. Click here for more information.

Federally-Subsidized Training Available from ATSSA

The American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) has released its 2010 schedule of federally-subsidized Work Zone Traffic Control Supervisor and Flagging classes for Indiana. All grant courses are discounted to free for federal agency employees, $25 for public agency (state/local) employees and $50 for private employees. Click here for the full schedule.

EPA Administrator Calls for More Clean Water Enforcement

Citing construction sites as one of “the biggest threats” to our nations’ waters, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lisa Jackson called for strengthened enforcement efforts that would include criminal and civil penalties. In testimony to a congressional committee, she said EPA would reexamine its approach to National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System enforcement that includes erosion and sediment control requirements for construction sites. AGC and Environmental Group Agree on Diesel Cleanup Requirements

Cuts in diesel air emissions could be contractually required under accord reached by AGC with the Clean Air Task Force. The two groups jointly called on Congress to give state officials the authority and funding to require use of clean construction equipment on federally-funded transportation projects. [more]

Using or Considering Using BIM? Join AGC's BIM User Forum

Several years ago, AGC of America launched the online BIM User Forum as interest in building information modeling (BIM) gained broader adoption. Forum participants will not only learn from advanced users of this three-dimensional computer-aided design software for modeling a construction project, they will quickly be able to help others use BIM. McGraw-Hill Construction Foresees Partial Construction Upturn

In the October 9 – 16 issue of Data DIGest, AGC of America Chief Economist Ken Simonson reports that the level of construction starts in 2010 is expected to climb 11 percent, following the 25 percent decline predicted for 2009, as forecasted by McGraw-Hill Construction (MHC). State Budget Agency Minutes Now Available

Each month in this newsletter, ICA will publish the agenda and minutes of the Indiana State Budget Agency’s meetings. The minutes of the August 25 meeting indicate that the state authorized funding for the construction of many state projects, including projects at state universities.
